Leading in a Pandemic

In our first Multiply Podcast episode, Paul Lowe and James Rankine interview Jon Tyson (Church Planter and Lead Pastor of Church of the City New York) on leading in the midst of a pandemic. He touches on how to sustain hope, keeping unity within the church and how to keep your heart guarded.

For the most part, people were basically happy pagans doing their thing without a need for God, but now that’s been shaken up and people are asking the big questions. I am so very hopeful about the disruption in the state of the typical heart and what God’s going to do with that.

Guard it [abiding in Jesus] above everything else. All fruit comes from abiding. All peace comes from abiding. The culture of your heart becomes the culture of your life, the culture of your leadership. So tend to the heart.

I don’t believe the human heart was actually built by God to contain the amount of tragedy we’re seeing. Only God has the capacity in His deity, to carry the weight of the brokenness of the world.

Surface unity says “say the right things/have the right opinions and we’ll all get along” – that’s like politically correct unity. Deep unity is, I believe, relational. Take the issue of race, it’s easy do symbolic acts. The real change happens through friendships and commitment.
