SONG STORY

I was away from home leading worship at a conference for the weekend and I can’t remember exactly was said, but someone said something that made me feel all this pressure to lead worship well, as if I was responsible for their own relationship and response to God, and as if they were looking to me to make something happen for them. And I was really hit by it. I just found myself walking out of there and went down to a nearby lake to get some space and time with God. Having a toddler at home, that space is a rare thing and I needed it so much. And I just started talking to God and singing ‘Look To Jesus, oh look to Jesus’ and it came out of that desire to point to Jesus as the only one that can save us, the only one that can do anything for us. It’s not about the worship leader, or how great the band is. It’s about Jesus. And sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that. We cannot do this without God.

It’s not about the worship leader, or how great the band is. It’s about Jesus.

I don’t write many songs that are about God rather than to God. But in this case I feel it’s an important message. To call ourselves into worship… That’s why at the end of the song I tweak the line ‘Oh how I love Him’… to become ‘Oh how I love you’ so that by the end we are drawn into direct conversation and worship of God. We’re not going through someone else.

LYRICS

Say your prayers and let them soar
Fall on your knees and be restored
Look to Jesus

Oh look to Jesus, oh look to Jesus
Oh look to Jesus, look to Jesus

Open your eyes to the Son of God
You’ll see the light if you just, just look up
Look to Jesus
Lift your head and take his hand
You’re in the prayers of the risen man
Look to Jesus

No he won’t let you go, no he won’t let you down
No he won’t give you up, for he loves you now

Oh look to Jesus, oh look to Jesus
Oh look to Jesus, look to Jesus
Oh hallelujah, oh hallelujah Oh hallelujah, hallelujah

How I love him, how I love him, how I love him
